We’re so into social networking that it has become a giant chunk of our lifestyle. These days its more of a status symbol than anything else. Gone are the days when one could just spend a day out without having to chart our every movement. Now, if you don’t, you are bound to make people (read friends) wonder what in the world is up with you!
If you ask me, this whole social networking doesn’t seem to be very social at all! If the movie is anything to go by, Mark Zuckerberg had a different idea altogether. At the moment, the whole ‘social’ furore is a self-obsessed cry for attention…and marketing. Not that I have anything against marketing. I think social media is a great way to get the message across; seeing as on an average, most people check-in atleast 5 times a day! So lets face it, its all been commercialized, and no harm there I tell you.
But thats just it. Everyone seems to be aggressively marketing themselves. To what end? To show the world the successes you’ve made? The fact that you’re moving in nothing less than elite circles? To make your ‘friends’ green with envy seeing your oh-so-fun photos? Do you really think they care? Not to forget the gross amount of friends one has on their Facebook page, when in reality one may have probably, oh say, 10 people you actually hang out with or care about. But thats fodder for yet another post! And the most hilarious, yes I said hilarious part is that very often, you’ll not find too many ‘Likes’ or comments under your updates. Of course I’m not talking about the drop-dead-gorgeous ones who have a humungoid 659 fan following. They would have 300 Likes and 150 comments under a photo or a mundane update that reads “Doing laundry”. Oh yes, that should cause a riot! But for the average person, it would be one of those ridiculous posts which just hangs there, self-conciously, with ni ‘Likes’, comments or re-tweets.
I’d love to elaborate, but I’d like to leave you in thought…Why are YOU on Facebook or Twitter or MySpace, or any of the other sites? I know I’m there to stay in touch with my friends…evidence is the very modest number of friends I have! And by the way, I’m chilling at Harry’s right now, with a drink and a free plate of fries my hubs won! (would be my Facebook update)
So, what are YOU doing on those oh-so-popular social networking sites? 🙂
